Many of the original electronic gurus of old started their careers with amateur radio equipment that was referred to as ham radio. These were homemade radios that had to be constructed by scratch. This was a challenge and also educated many of them in the inner workings in the numerous parts within the amateur radio equipment. There have been many that have used this as a means of vaulting their careers in their electronics and this has been reflected in their technical expertise in the radios.
Many of the modern radios that are used by amateurs are usually a piece meal of various items as the FCC has strict regulations on this. Some countries offer amateur radio equipment that can be shipped to the United States and thus offers the person a means of having a radio setup that can have a short reach, but give the person some experience that is hard to come by.
Some places will offer amateur radio equipment as a means for people to learn the inner workings of the radio transmitting so that they can eventually become more involved in the radio industry in the future.
Some United States based companies sell simplified equipment configurations, but these are meant only to be used in what is deemed as the safe harbor hours and the person is in many cases forced to register with the FCC. They also are usually encouraged to go through the FCC training even though they are using amateur radio equipment they are required to be aware of the do's and don’t with the radio. These have gradually become rarer as the FCC has been cracking down in some areas where amateur radio equipment has been abused in the broadcasting of pirate radio shows.
It has been something that has been viewed with a bit of scrutiny and distaste by many of the radio community. This has put some extra tension on those that have amateur radio equipment at home. Although some of the newer equipment that is available is more of a software base. Some of the newer software makes it possible to have an internet radio or even to create a show on the air that is sent to the station via ftp or telnet.
The most common program that is used in this fashion is called SAW32, it makes it possible to add all the promos and the dialogue in a fashion that one can create a full show in their own home and have it automated on a station, the Internet, or even on their own home station. This is still something that should be used in caution and with the consideration of the FCC if one resides in the United States.
